LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding System Surgery
Mercy Center for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery is one of very few Midwest weight loss surgical centers performing the LAP-BAND® surgery.
The LAP-BAND® system is considered to be the least traumatic of all weight loss surgeries. This operation, which can be performed laparoscopically, requires no cutting or stapling of the stomach.
As with the laparoscopic gastric bypass, you normally will leave the hospital the day after this laparoscopic operation and two to three days if an incision is required.
One advantage to the LAP-BAND® is that you will return to normal activities quicker. Another is that because no permanent surgery is performed on the stomach, the LAP-BAND® system does not have to be permanent. If the LAP-BAND® is removed for any reason, the stomach generally returns to its original shape.
One of the advantages of the LAP-BAND® System is that the diameter of the band outlet is adjustable to meet your needs. The inner surface of the band can be inflated with a saline solution or deflated to modify the size of the stomach. The sensation you feel during this process is similar to when you give blood.
The band is connected by a tube to a reservoir, which is placed close to the skin during surgery. After the operation, your surgeon can control the amount of saline in the band by inserting a fine needle through the skin. If the band is too loose and weight loss too small, more saline can be added to reduce the size of the stoma. If it is too tight, the surgeon can remove some of the saline. This can be done without more surgery.
The LAP-BAND® System is another aid to weight loss. It is not a cure. You must still be committed to lifestyle changes in diet and exercise to achieve permanent weight-loss results. Our entire team will be here to support you following your weight loss surgery.
